What research do you base your recommendation for the Therapeutic Listening program?
Therapeutic music listening programs have been utilized for many years. There are multiple programs available all originating from Dr. Tomatis, hence named the "Tomatis Method" or 'The Listening Program (TLP)'. Professionals who have developed spin off programs are using his science. As an occupational therapist working with sensory disorders, I, Lori Frommer, so desperately wanted a way to enter the brain of my kiddos and probe and stimulate the areas needing it. Of course that's not possible. I investigated programs that had the potential to pack a punch in support of typical clinical sensory programs. I chose 'Therapeutic Listening (TL)', specifically because it also expanded on Dr. Tomatis' Listening Program (which addresses auditory processing).
'Therapeutic Listening' is developed by an occupational therapist, Sheila Frick, targeting sensory regulation and modulation. The training and continuing education courses within this program also support occupational therapy intervention techniques along with the listening approach. Sensory Processing Disorder is not a recognized diagnosis in the medical field at this time, but is rather considered a symptom. Many parents and therapists argue that. I don't argue one way or the other, but I look for ways to enhance sensory functioning through science based theory, science based reports of observed brain changes under MRI and EEG with this program, feedback from other professionals, and of course client feedback and observable change. It is not 100% promised effective like those skin changing products promising to make you look younger. When I started with the training process, there were reports and confirmation from assistants that were present at the course that of those therapists using this program exclusively, they felt they had an 85% success rate. I found that reasonable as so many advertisements say 100% guarantee.....
This program is a tool to be recommended and implemented through clinical judgement. It is not a stand alone tool/program. By understanding the selected music and it's electronic alterations to target specific brain areas (I call it massaging those areas with the music), albums are selected to support specific therapy objectives. It's not the music that makes the child able to process better, but it helps him modulate and be available for receiving and maximizing therapeutic intervention techniques and behavior modifications. Here is the link to the official website research page. I hope it answers more specific questions anyone may have. You can also inquire to them with any additional research related questions. https://vitallinks.com/therapeutic-listening/research/
