How do you get to know my child's therapy needs if he is uncooperative and having a tantrum?
Fluctuating moods and behaviors are inherent when working with young children. At Home Therapy Solutions we are not magicians, but the occupational therapists and developmental-behavior interventionists are highly qualified to redirect as needed from the intended session in order to observe the behavior, and to gather valuable information of the dysregulated state. We will work with you and your child for behavior and or sensory management, if that window of opportunity is present at that time. Otherwise it will be addressed at another sessions.
Often, the child is receiving therapy for emotional and sensory dysregulation and/or frustration from a language delay. While the therapist relies heavily on parent reporting, eventually the opportunity presents to witness the meltdown. You, the parent, do not have to be embarrassed or feel obligated to handle it. It is an opportunity for the therapist to demonstrate an effective response. There is almost always valuable information garnered from even a meltdown session. Therapy is an evolutionary process. It is highly recommended that your child's ability to benefit from the therapy is not determined based on a poorly timed meltdown. We advise the parent not to throw in the towel prematurely. Knowing when/how to intervene, when to wait it out, and how to minimize potential future meltdowns will come from training the parent and child over cumulative sessions. Timing is everything. In the early stages, the objective is not to escalate the your child's undesirable behavior, while you, the parent, learns new techniques to be in control.
We are here for you and your child. If another intervention service is indicated to simultaneously address your child's needs, we will make that recommendation to you.
